Major Month of August Kicks off with “Guns and Hoses” Event

Rich Vleck and Gary Montgomery, DUNDEE, NY, (July 31, 2012)- As August embarks on 2012, a major month of action lies ahead at the Black Rock Speedway, kicked off by a special event for any sort of fan this Friday.

A slew of special events are in place for this Friday’s “Guns and Hoses” featuring a Police vs. Fire Match Race.  In addition, an appearance by Ozzy will also be a highlight on the night.  Perhaps the biggest highlight of the night though will be turned in by the full-fendered late models.

For the first time in nearly a month, the late models return to the 4/10-mile oval. John Waters has been the dominant driver of the division this year, but that does not mean that this will be a walk in the park for him.

Waters will enter Friday’s Bicknell Racing Products (BRP) Dart Challenge at Black Rock Speedway (BRS) undefeated after three Challenge events. Waters hopes

to extend his Challenge win streak to four and then make it a clean sweep when the Challenge concludes at Little Valley Speedway on Wednesday August 29.

“We will take each race one at a time.  It would be cool to win them all, but the odds of doing that are not great.  We have had a dream season so far this year and, of course, we want it to continue winning.  Dale (LeBarron - car owner) has given me everything we need to win, but many of the other guys have good stuff too.  I have had a lot of good luck which plays heavily into the success we have been enjoying.  Our luck changed on Saturday at Woodhull when I got caught up in a crash.  I hope that kind of luck is behind us,” shared Waters from his race shop in Whitesville, NY

Thirteen wins, a bunch of top five finishes, and only twice has Waters not finished a race this season.  That is the definition of a “dream season.”

Included in Waters’s win total are four of the six BRP late model events completed to date at BRS.  He has accumulated eight wins including the last four in a row at Woodhull Raceway and a single win at Little Valley Speedway. A “dream season” indeed!

The only drivers to beat Waters at BRS this year are Bruce Miller and Mike Wonderling.  Both of those drivers will enter Friday’s event with the sole objective of adding to their win total.

Jason Knowles, the 2009 Black Rock late model champion, has finished second to Waters in both prior Challenge events and the second generation driver from Painted Post will be out to reverse the finishing order on the 3rd.  Knowles is currently second in Challenge points, just 25 points behind Waters.

The BRP Dart Challenge is a cooperative effort between John Charlesworth of Little Valley Speedway and Dean Hoag of Black Rock Speedway. The Challenge offers a $6500 point fund for six events.

Other weekly action returning after a few weeks off will also be hotly contested undoubtedly.  Brady Fultz has reassumed the point lead in the Hoselton Automall Sportsman division with four races remaining.  There are four drivers within 21 of the Dundee driver though, including defending champion Donnie Lawson, who won the last time out at BRS.

Chris Fisher has taken a narrow two-point lead over Bob Buono in the street stock division.  Dylan Cecce is trying to make it a three-car battle in this final month though after an impressive victory three weeks ago.

Phil Yaw continues to hold the IMCA Modified point lead, but with Dave Yehl and Mike Smith eight and in nine points back, respectively, it is anything but safe.  The second-year division has seen a host of different winners, and that trend may continue Friday.

Rich Sharspteen II has taken an 11 point advantage over his buddy James Kreidler III in the Signs Plus of Kanona 4-cylinder class, the largest gap seen in the division all year long.  Sharpsteen was involved in a large crash last Saturday at Woodhull though and will have to work hard to be ready for Friday.

In other 4-cylinder action, Steve Rogers continues to hold the FWD point lead by 15 markers over Jamie Eldridge while Lance Irwin is ahead of Justin Eldridge by just 11 points in the bandit division.

Racing action gets underway at 6:45 P.M.  Remember that kids 16 and under are free.  For more information, visit www.BlackRockSpeedway.com.
