Ray Bliss and Jeremy Wonderling Bounce Back from Bad Luck for Black Rock Wins
By RICH VLECK
One week ago, Ray Bliss Jr. was denied his second Hoselton Automall Sportsman win of the season when his right rear tire began deflating under a lap 24 caution. Aided by a quality spot in the handicap, he left nothing to chance on what turned out to be a beautiful Friday Night as he dominated for his second win of the year.
Bliss, of Warsaw, put Ray Smith’s orange No. 12 back into Victory Lane, leading all 20 laps of a feature that seemed to never get started. Once the laps began to click off though, Bliss was prolific on the bottom of the 4/10-mile oval.
“Zeke the Streak” would become the second driver in a row to walk away with an inflated pay day, as 26 sportsman competitors helped to fill the pits. That number quickly began to deteriorate though early on as drivers were resorted pit side before a lap was completed.
Randy McCulloch once again had to settle for the bridesmaid position in his No. 21, his fourth runner-up finish of the season at Black Rock. Last week’s winner Loren Lincoln was once again solid for third, with Nick Guererri having his season-high finish in fourth. Point leader Donnie Lawson completed the top-five.
Jeremy Wonderling was strong a week ago in his No. 3J in the Insinger/Sunoco Race Fuels Late Models, as he was able to get his chassis to roll over effectively and blast around the track. He would finish second to J.J. Mazur that night though; this time around he was able to be the man in Victory Lane.
Wondelring, of Scio, rim-rode the outside of the track to his third BRS win of the season, his first since May 21. Larry Knowles would give him a good chase in the closing stages, but came up just short in second.
As Knowles followed Wonderling across the line, polesitter Dan Cobb completed a quality run in third. Local cars driven by Mikey Wonderling and Quinn Sutherland rounded out the top-five.
Leading point chasers Jason Knowles saw his advantage in the standings grow despite finishing sixth as J.J. Mazur fell out on lap seven with a loose wheel.
Chris Fisher also expanded his stranglehold on his point battle, but did it in more impressive fashion as he captured his fifth American Racer Tire Street Stock Feature of the year.
The Bluff Point driver took a stronghold on the lead with four to go in his No. 37 and held off Frank Guererri Jr., last week’s winner, to take the double-checkered flags.
Nate Peckham would make it three past track champions in the top-three. Larry Fenton would tie his season best in fourth, with Andy Fisk rounding out the top-five.
Terry Povoski saw his winning streak in Signs Plus of Kanona competition snapped at five last week by Ray Speicher. This time by, Povoski got him back, by just two feet.
“The Tornado” from Bradford notched his ninth win of the season after driving up from the ninth starting position in his No. 4. After Povoski and Speicher would be Rich Sharpsteen II, defending Rookie of the Year Dave Matwiejow, who was out for the first time in 2010, and Chad Ayers, who completed the top-10.
To begin the night, Zach Teed claimed his fourth Home Necessities Bandit Feautre of the year, his second in a row and in the process he also took over the point lead by a single marker.
Teed, in the No. 6, held off Noah Herington to gain three points on the wheelman of the No. 7H and now is a top the standings for the first time this season with just four weeks remaining to decide the championship.
Also on the card was a Firefigther Enduro, which was a big hit amongst the healthy crowd. Fans will once again be treated to a great night of racing next Friday, this time with the biggest show of the season as it is NASCAR Night, benefiting Motor Racing Outreach. A-Verdi Storage Containers and S.P. Wilson Lakes Gas will present the $4,000-to-win ASCS Patriot event, the BRP CanAm Late Models, Original Pizza Logs 600cc Micro Sprint Tour, NASCAR match races and features for all weekly divisions. Racing will begin early at 6:30 p.m. For more information visit www.BlackRockSpeedway.com.
